"You can't stay in business for 108 years unless you're treating your customers with respect and great care. In fact, our reputation is made or lost from each individual sale," says third-generation owner Trip deCordova.

The Story Behind the Store

Benedict Subaru GMC Truck is your premier retailer of new and pre-owned vehicles in Central New York's Chenango River Valley. Benedict's has served hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers since John N. Benedict founded the dealership back in 1905. It is currently owned and operated by Trip deCordova, who began his tenure in 1980 and became owner in 1995.
Originally known as the J.N. Benedict Corporation, the dealership had offices in Sherburne and Binghamton and featured franchises with Cadillac and Reo. It also sold Frigidaire appliances. Trip's grandfather, Carl E. Fribley, owned and operated Benedict's from 1932 until his death in 1969 and Trip's uncle, Peter deCordova, was dealer from 1971 until 1994. All three owners depended heavily upon the late Nelson Benedict, J.N.'s nephew and vice president of the company from 1933 until 1976 when he retired.

"We are very proud to say that Benedict's was built to optimize energy use and protect and conserve water. We are most probably the first environmentally responsible auto dealership in Central New York," Trip said.

In 1990, the dealership was moved from its longtime location in downtown Norwich to a new building on the corner of East River Road and state Route 23. In designing the facility, serious attention was paid to employee safety, environmental concerns and customer satisfaction. Igneous trap rock hand was hand trowled into the service department and body shop floors and married with ceramic drains so that no oils, thinners or gasoline products will ever permeate into the ground or ground water. Separators located throughout the building, including in the employee washroom, collect all grease which is later burned in our recycled waste oil powered furnace, allowing us to conserve energy. Thinner is collected, picked up and disposed of as regulated, and we crush all of our oil filters after draining every last drop. Benedict's recently upgraded all of its lighting per state specifications.
In 2002, deCordova expanded Benedict's, adding a larger Service Department, Collision Repair and Detail Center. We also have a knowledgeable Parts Department for those looking to complete repairs themselves. In 2012, the dealership received a complete makeover, both inside and out. An all new, modernized customer lounge offers a cozy friendly feel with coffee and specialty water at the ready, cable television, up-to-date reading materials and children's toys.

"Benedict Corporation is proud to employ 30-plus employees and the dealership wouldn't be what it is today without each and every one of them," said deCordova.

Benedict's mechanics are regularly trained and certified to utilize the most technologically advanced tools and equipment available on the market. Check out our employee photos and bios and discover the kind of care and attention you can expect to receive. Many of our employees have made Benedict's their preferred place to work for 10, 20 and even 40 years!

"Chenango County is not only a great place to do business, but a great place to raise a family and enjoy life," says Trip.

deCordova says the Norwich-based dealership's success relies heavily upon its reputation within the community it serves. He personally strives to shop locally and gives his name and charitable donations back to the community that Benedict's depends on. He voluntarily coached the Chenango Chargers soccer team for 12 years, in addition to to coaching the state division champion varsity soccer team for Oxford Academy in 1997. The company's corporate sponsorships include many arts-related endeavors such as the Chenango County Council of the Arts, Colorscape Chenango, the Chenango Blues Festival, the Phoenix Danse Theater, and many local school plays. The business also annually supports the United Way, Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich YMCA, Rotary, Norwich SPCA, and Oxford Memorial Library, to name a few.
